Nutty Bites 123: Intro to Ghibli – Ponyo

Nutty Bites 123: Intro to Ghibli – Ponyo

Nutty Bites 123: Intro to Ghibli - PonyoPonyo is a bit out of the viewing order for us because it happened to be playing in theatres. If a film is in theatres and we can see it we will always jump the que. Better yet, this tim Tek and I were in VA visiting Jen and Jason, so we all got to go to the threatre together. This is the first time we had that chance. We have watched Princess Mononoke together, but that was in a hotel while Tek and I felt their eyes on us watching our reactions. A theatre is much better.

This also happens to be the 10th anniversary for Ponyo’s release. So that is extra special. Spoiler for the podcast, we loved this movie. It was pure joy. If you haven’t seen it, see it. It is worth the watch, You can watch it with anyone in your life, no matter the age.

Nutty Bites 111: Intro to Ghibli – Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind

Nutty Bites 111: Intro to Ghibli – Nausicaä of the Valley of the WindNausicaä of the Valley of the Wind is coming a bit out of order thanks to it being shown locally at the theatre. We couldn’t pass up the chance to see it on the big screen with an audience. Originally we had planned to watch all of the Miyazaki Ghibli movies first, move on to Takahata, then watch non Takahata/Miyazaki Ghibli movies, and then go back to Miyazaki’s non Ghibli movies. The chance to see the movies in theatre made us rework the viewing order. We also realized that we didn’t want to have a bunch of sad movies together, so we reworked the order. Mostly in release order, except when we needed to put an uplifting film between two sad ones. There is a link below.

Ghibli Cast Rating SystemWe also clarified our rating system since some listeners were confused by our ratings. This should make our ratings a bit more clear and less insulting to some. (Though I am still insulted at Jason’s Whisper of the Heart rating).

Nutty Bites 108: Intro to Ghibli – Princess MononokePrincess Mononoke is a great art piece but our panelists debate about whether or not it is a good movie. This was recorded at Balticon 51, the panelists are Nuchtchas, Tek, Jen, Jason, Laura Nicole, and Grig Larson. Sorry if we crushed the heart of the fans, but this panel was divided between loving this movie and not loving it.

Intro to Ghibli, a new regular segment of Nutty Bites and the Talk Nerdy 2 Me Podcasts. Jen & Jason guide newbies Nuchtchas & Tek through the movies of Studio Ghibli. We are starting with the Hayao Miyazaki films in order(ish), just bumping My Neighbor Totoro to the first.  Once we finish those we will hit up the Isao Takahata films, then the Ghibli films without either director, then two non Ghibli Miyazaki films, and we also have some bonus shorts to sprinkle throughout.

Daily Creativity: Intro to Ghibli show art

Daily Creativity: Intro to GhibliDaily Creativity: Intro to Ghibli show art

I made this for a new segment on Nutty Bites, Intro to Ghibli, where Jen, Jason, Tek, and myself explore the studio Ghibli movies. I drew the four of us with a Totoro surrounded by soot sprites. Because why not? The Totoro has become iconic of the studio and the soot sprites are everywhere. While I’m still unspoiled for most of the movies, I haven’t been living under a rock, so I know this, plus Totoro was the first movie we covered.

I drew this with blending markers on some really nice marker paper that doesn’t absorb and spread the ink. It really makes things pop. I love it. Wish I had it in more sizes. I’m pretty happy with how this came out. I used photos of us from various Balticons for reference. I think I did the worst on myself, I have a hard time capturing myself, but think I did amazingly well on Jen. Yet Tek says he thinks I did the best on myself, so what do I know. Tek was easy, if you remember the short lived web comic I did eons ago, Picnic Kids, he looks a lot like that. What do you think?
