Daily Creativity: Love Your Body

This Love Your Body painting was inspired by a self portrait photograph a friend of mine too. I kept thinking about the image and realized I wanted to paint it. I asked her permission and when she said yes I knew right away this was going to be a watercolor. In the original photo it was as if she was filled with light, so selecting oranges, reds, and yellows for my color pallet was a given. I used blue to contrast the colors and make the figure even brighter. I don’t think I captured the feeling of light as I would have liked. Yet I hope I caught the feeling of the pose, the bold look to the viewer and expressive posture. I find this piece inspiring, bold and aware. I want to be that woman in the painting. Hiriki No Yosei Ni, Elbow Power Number Two in english, is about moving your body, and your partner’s body with as much distance you can without moving your feet. Shifting your weight and moving direction. It’s important to move on the balls of your feet, not your heels. It’s important to be stable all through the movement. Then you get under uke with elbow power. Much like Ichi, Ni is also about getting under your partner. The shift, is called yoy, we yoy a lot in aikido. Ink on Paper.

DareDevil is my friend Claire’s favorite superhero of all time. When I finally got to meet her (back in July of 2015) face to face I painted this for her, Rory dressed as Matt Murdock’s superhero persona. I took a photo of it before giving her the original and I realized tonight when I painted the Rory as Luke Cage piece that I never posted this work here. I actually never even edited any of the photos from that trip. Sorry Mom, those Egret pics were sitting on my external hard drive for two years too. Thank goodness I’m a digital hoarder and still had the raw files on my external drive. So here we are, in all it’s glory, not lost to time, just forgotten for a while. Watercolor and ink on paper.

Luke Cage is an awesome show, and the image of the bullet hole hoodie is inspiring. I won’t ruin it for anyone who hasn’t seen it yet, but when it gets to this point, the image is profound. To celebrate this I use this bullet hole hoodie as the outfit that Rory uses to pay homage to this amazing character. This is the second Defender that I have painted Rory as, I will have to add Jessica Jones and Iron Fist to the mix to complete the series. I actually can’t find the photo of the DareDevil painting I did for Claire, so I may have to do another. I found it, finally posted it, go take a look. Watercolors on paper

Daily Creativity: Hiriki No Yosei Ichi – Elbow Power Number One

Hiriki No Yosei IchiDaily Creativity: Hiriki No Yosei Ichi – Elbow Power Number One

Hiriki No Yosei Ichi is one of the basic movements for aikido. It’s called Elbow Power number one in english. By sliding forward and under you push your elbow forward to get control of your opponent. This movement is found in so many of the techniques you learn in aikido. It sounds simple but is so difficult to learn. Like all of the basic movements, mastering this will improve every aspect of your aikido.

I first drew this with pencil getting all of the lines and angles acurate and then used a brush pen to draw the lines you see. I then erased the pencil lines leaving only the fluid ink brush strokes to try to evoke movement and simplicity. Ink on paper.
