Daily Creativity: Rory as a Union Soldier – Union Dragon

Tek and I visited Gettysburg before going down to Balticon. I highly recommend this trip, it has changed so much since the last time I really explored there, twenty years ago. The roads are paved, there is this auto tour you can buy (in CD form now but there is an app in Beta) and they built some overlooks. All while preserving the integrity of the historical site.

We learned a lot we didn’t know. Even having studied the Civil War I missed a lot of things that I learned on this visit. I was inspired to paint Rory as a union soldier. Artillery of course. I’m thinking the war might have been won faster with Dragons on the Union side, but it would have been a very different war.

I started painting this at Balticon, doing some work on the few moments I wasn’t on a panel or getting my 5-2-1. I finished it when I got home. So yes this does break the rules of Daily Creativity as it took more than one day to finish, but in the time total it wasn’t more than I would spend in a day, I think. I am pleased with how it came out and had Tek check my work with the depiction of the enfield riffle Rory is holding. I painted some dirt on his uniform and fur, and tried to make it look dirty. Faded blues too. I’m really happy with how this piece came out. I may be the only person who wanted to see Rory as a soldier, but it marks this trip for me.

Breaking the Fourth wall is the concept I had while drawing this. I wanted to see if I could play with perspective enough to make it look like Rory was moving through this space realistically. Realistically for a cartoon dragon that it. Originally it wasn’t going to be colored in, but halfway through I changed my mind. Which wasn’t the best because I didn’t draw this on marker paper, I drew it on regular sketch paper, so the ink bleed a bit. I tried to clean it up after scanning and by using my colorless blending marker. Ink on Paper.

Jessica Jones is an amazing character but figuring out how to have Rory portray her was a bit difficult. Unlike many other superheroes Jessica doesn’t have a real costume, and anyone could be rearing jeans and a biker jacket, right? So I styled this one after the cover style I most think of when I think of the Alias & following comics. The washed out watercolor look. If you are a fan of the Netflix show you will notice that the opening credits also makes a nod to these covers. I posed Rory similarly but had to put more defined green for him so it was clear who was in Jessica’s spot. Watercolor painting on paper.

One Punch Man is on Netflix finally! Just season one but it is glorious! It gets points from me for art style, going from almost no detail when Saitima isn’t fighting or energetic to total detail when he is in the zone and full on fighting.Points for pointing out tropes in anime and then subverting them. It gets points for it’s comedic timing. Points for character design and world buildings. It is just so much fun to watch. Tonight Tek wanted to see One Punch Dragon, Rory dressed as Saitima. I wanted the fist and the shopping bag included because I just adore his relaxed manor. Painted in watercolor on paper.

Daily Creativity: Hug the World, follow Rory’s example

Hug the world, we all need a hug right about now. How else can I show this than to have Rory do on paper what I can’t do in reality. I drew this with very soft colors, trying to make the two dimensional image feel softer. I used dark ink outlines to create a contrast for this softness to contain the form. I thought I knew what I was going to draw tonight, I had a small training session with my sensei tonight. Five of us gathered to do a demonstration for some scouts who would get a martial arts badge for participating. They didn’t show up and it ended up being free mat time for us. After training I was talking to my sensei about my aikido drawings and how they make me think about the basic movements more in depth. I was sure I would complete my series when I got home.

Then I read the news. I won’t elaborate on my thoughts there (partially because I’m not sure of my thoughts) because this isn’t what this is about. I saw the reactions online and realized there are a lot of people and the whole world needing a hug right about now. It’s going to be hard, and reactions will test us. My hope is that we can react with kindness for each other and to not mistake our friends as enemies. We are hurting, and people do strange things when they hurt. Be like Rory, Hug the World.
