Daily Creativity: Pluto – Everyone’s favorite planetoid!

Daily Creativity: Pluto - Everyone's favorite planetoid!Daily Creativity: Pluto

I love Pluto, and not in a hipster “It deserves to still be a planet way.” It’s a planetoid and that’s cool. It may not be a planet but it’s still part of the family. Thanks to New Horizons we have seen some amazing images of this planetoid, including the iconic heart shape on the surface. With that in mind suddenly Pluto became much more interesting to paint. I have already painted Mars (currently on display in Tek’s office at the school), Neptune, and Jupiter, this is just one more for the solar system series. I’m working my up to Saturn, the rings make me nervous, I want to do them justice.

Daily Creativity: Embarking on Self Love! Love Your Body

Embarking on Self Love - Love Your Body - Daily CreativityEmbarking on Self Love, another piece in the Love Your Body series. This was inspired by a conversation about some fat shaming art and I wanted to turn the title of that art into something positive and uplifting. I painted my figure in yellows and oranges because I wanted her to seem like she was glowing, glowing with love. I then used a heart to be perhaps a little too literal about the concept, but it also marches some oil paintings I’ve done for a show, but not shared online, yet. Looking in a mirror is one of the most evocative images I can think of when it comes to self image, so I think that fits too.  I painted this in watercolors much like many of my other recent paintings. I really like the control and color that I get from watercolor. Plus it lets me paint without spending multiple days on a project and having to wait over a week for it to dry.

Daily Creativity: Steampunk Dragon Rory

Steampunk Dragon Rory - Daily CreativityDaily Creativity: Steampunk Dragon Rory

A Steampunk Dragon you ask? I wanted to use my brown micron markers tonight, so I decided to draw something Steampunk. Rory is always a good subject so I thought, if Rory could build himself one thing in the steampunk world, what would it be? Steam wings of course. Originally I was going to only use ink, but when I finished outlining I wanted to paint it, but the paper I choose isn’t good for watercolors. So instead I used the right end of my colored pencils spectrum.

Daily Creativity: RWBY Tribute

RWBY tribute team NTJR (Nutty, Tek, Jason, Rory)Daily Creativity: RWBY Tribute

I love the show RWBY, if you don’t know how much, listen to this podcast episode where along with the Talk Nerdy 2 Me Podcast we discuss it in depth. Tonight Tek and I watched the Volume 3 finale, actually we watched the last three episodes of volume 3. It was so full of feels I must admit I was crying during the finale. Jason has been urging Tek and I to complete the series so we could talk about it. We barely touched on it, but we did discuss our counterparts in the show. Meet team NTJR (someone make up the team word for me please?) We all agree that with Velvet’s box weapon that power is defiantly my power.  Tek is the cyborg general, and Jason is a variation of Flint (we had to replace his trumpet with a cast iron skillet. Rory of course is a Grimm.

I had some difficulty with this piece. At first I was going to draw us all in a battle pose, but that was very tricky. One, fitting everything on one page and still keeping it a daily creativity. What I was planning would have ended up being a many day if not longer project. Another issue was turning Velvet into me. The character is not just slim, almost all of the characters are tiny, but she is one of the few who lacks curves. I am full of curves, I’m all curves. I’m fat, and round, and curvy, and not Velvet’s shape. So figuring that out with her battle costume was tricky. Her Beacon uniform would have been easier. I had it mostly down when I got the notion to do the four split screen image idea that the RWBY logo has.  Once I decided to go with that, everything got easier.

All told though I spent more hours on this than most Daily Creativity projects. Still, I’m happy with it, and it’s very personal to me. Sure, it’s fan art for an Anime, but it’s also a great story, and something I share with the friends in this piece.

Daily Creativity: Calvin & Hobbes drawn as Rory & Tek

Tonight’s drawing is inspired by two pairs of my favorite friends. I love Calvin & Hobbes and their friendship, and it reminds me a little of Rory & Tek’s. I’ve done something like this before, check out this daily creativity of them crossing a river. I like making the Imaginary character (Hobbes) here Tek, and making Rory the real boy (Calvin), flipping the script so to speak. I also love this kind of hug, it just makes me happy.
