Daily Creativity: Breakfast O-Matic 3000 the Breakfast RobotI can’t tell you why I drew a robot today, other than I like drawing them. As I drew this one it became a cooking bot, the Breakfast O-Matic 3000, because why not. I really like how I did the shading. It looks even better in person, but my new scanner is better at picking up the details. I think I like drawing robots because they can be made so cute. Something about them when they don’t look human is adorable to me. Coming up with new shapes for them is fun too. This one has the whist, spatula, and even a toaster in the body.

Daily Creativity: Tundra the Bronx Zoo Polar Bear PBUHTundra was the polar bear at the Bronx Zoo for 26 years. He was born there and lived his whole life there. I wish I still had the photo I took of him back in 95 (I lost a trove of my 35mm photos and negatives in the move from NS to NB, so if anyone finds a wooden wine box full of 35mm prints and negatives, let me know, I miss them), where he waved at me. He was really cute. I wanted to bring Tek to meet him and many trips we just didn’t get the time, so I made it a point this last trip. Only to find that he had passed just a short bit before we visited. I was so sad. No polar bears, but worse, no Tundra. Today is National Polar Bear Day, who else could I draw but Tundra. I was originally going to recreate him waving at me by using a few reference pictures, but then I found a photo of him napping and it seemed too perfect not to use for his homage.

Daily Creativity: Trash PandaTrash Panda is a tumblr name for a raccoon, but I decided to take the term literally tonight. This is a fountain pen painting. I drew it with a fountain pen and then used water mixed with the ink to create a watercolor, since the ink is water soluble. I really enjoy how these come out, and it gives me a reason to use ink that isn’t waterproof. If you don’t know by now, I have let myself fall headfirst into fountain pens again. I could talk your ear off about them. I write with them, draw with them, I tinker and change their nibs or make frankenpens, and play with ink. So expect some more pieces like this in the future.

Daily Creativity: Kotegaeshi HandsToday I feel like I did the best Kotegaeshi throw I have ever done in aikido. So I was inspired for tonights painting. This throw is a little more complicated because uke (my partner) needs to do a jumping front breakfall (they have to roll without the use of their arms, and I have to give uke enough energy so they can do this. Not only did I do my jumps pretty nice when uke, but my throw really sent the energy from the hands to the elbow to the shoulder to the hips and launched my partner.

As for the art side, drawing and painting hands can be complicated, especially when they are in a complicated pose. I’m pretty pleased with how this came out. I wanted to use one color to not distract too much from the hands study.

She asked me for some art to put with it for her post, I sent her some and was inspired by her writing to draw this. I love the round circle of inspiration here.
