Daily Creativity: Fat Little Mermaid

Fat Little Mermaid - Daily CreativityDaily Creativity: Fat Little Mermaid

Last night I drew a common character a bit more fitting to my personal body type. I drew a Fat Little Mermaid, and I think she looks cute, and warm. I didn’t take too many liberties other than her size, though I think in the future I might make her more in my own style. I’ve thought a while about redrawing popular characters to make them chubby, I’ve seen it done before and it always looks cute to me. I painted this with ArtRage on my iPad. I wasn’t able to upload it until after class today.

Daily Creativity: Love Reading – Love Your Body

Love Reading - Daily Creativity - Love Your BodyDaily Creativity: Love Reading – Love Your Body

I love reading, and the photo (by and I believe of PinUpRubyMoon on tumblr) that inspired this piece made me think that the composition was all about someone loving reading and being engrossed in a book. Taking that into account I though I’d paint this in the colors of books, leather and paper. So I limited my pallet to browns and slight yellows. The title could use some work, but I’m not the best at naming pieces. If you’ve been following my Daily Creativity project you already know this.  I’m putting this also in the Love Your Body series of paintings though it’s not a nude and it’s not focused primarily on a body. There is a body, but to me the main idea of the composition is reading.

Daily Creativity: A Robot Crush

A Robot Crush - Daily Creativity - NIMLAS StudiosA Robot Crush

Who doesn’t love robots? I got the idea to draw the idea of a Robot crush, one robot crushing on another. Not sure where that aspect came from, but I wanted to draw robots all day since listening to an episode of Sue Watches Buffy, where they cover the episode Ted, and Em explains how she always tells her daughter to robots and how much she loves them. Since that I have had robots on the brain all day.

Daily Creativity: Deadwood Cast

Deadwood Cast - Daily CreativityDaily Creativity: Deadwood Cast

I love Deadwood, the HBO series, and yet I avoided watching it for years. I know so many people who love it but it just didn’t seem like my kind of show. I’m not really into westerns, and that’s what it looked like. This show is so not a western. I started watching it mainly because my friends started an introcast about it called Hooplecast (go listen to that, it’s a lot of fun, and loooooong episodes). I was still hesitant to watch it, since it wasn’t on netflix, but another friend had said he’s be a newbie listening along and sending in feedback. Then that friend passed away, and I felt a nice way to honor him was to take up that pledge myself.  I’m so happy I did. This show is fun. Why didn’t anyone tell me it was swearing in iambic pentameter? My favorite characters aren’t what most people’s favorite characters are. Jane is my number one favorite, followed by Elsworth and the Doc.

I figured if I was going to draw some of the cast I had to have Al and Seth, it’s a given. I couldn’t draw the main cast that’s on the DVDs though, no Jane!  Jane had to be in there, she’s just too great. I have grown to love Al’s character, but I don’t love Al. I like how awful he is and how complex he is. I feel like I should have drawn some dirt on Jane’s face, but was afraid it might make it hard to see her. After drawing Doc I got the feeling that his hair is really fluffy. I get weird thoughts when I draw.

Daily Creativity: Octopus

Daily Creativity: Octopus

Octopus - daily creativityI love octopuses and drawing them can be fun, but also frustrating. Where to put all of those limbs? I drew this one with ink and love how the limbs sort of make a heart on the right side.  I also had fun doing the head more realistic than other drawings I’ve done. I didn’t draw the individual suckers, oddly I thought adding that extra detail might make it too cartoony. I darkened the background in photoshop when I scanned this in, I think it makes the negative space pop more. I could sit and watch cephalopods for hours, I find them so fascinating.
