Daily Creativity: Gabourey Sidibe – Part of my Love Your Body Series

Gabourey Sidibe - Love Your BodyDaily Creativity: Gabourey Sidibe – Part of my Love Your Body Series

I’m a huge fan of Gabourey Sidibe, ever since she came on the scene I have loved her. She’s amazingly talented, she has made me cry, cheer, and feel so many emotions through her acting. She seems to have an amazing attitude and personality and is a personal role model on how to deal with haters.  She’s also sexy as hell and so beautiful, I have a bit of a girl crush on her.  I’ve drawn her before, but I think this is the first time I painted her. This is also the first time I’ll be tweeting her my art, I’m really happy with this piece. I love the pose and composition so much, and hope I did the photo justice. (it’s from a magazine shoot, if you know which one let me know and I will credit it. I found the image around the net uncredited.)

Daily Creativity: Women of Trek – TOS

Women of Trek - TOS - Daily CreativityDaily Creativity: Women of Trek – TOS

The Women of Trek (The Original Series), Uhura has been a role model of mine since I was young. Nurse Chapel is pretty awesome too. Growing up it’s good to have role models and it used to be that there were so few women in media that girls could look up to. Today things are much better and we are making strides (not full representation yet, but strides.) I wanted to pay tribute to some classic role models that inspired me and many of my generation and the one before.

In addition to the fictional characters, the women who played these roles are also role models. As I grew older and learned more about them I realized that the people behind these characters were even more inspiring than their roles on TV. Nichelle Nicholes and Majel Barrett were two amazing women who helped change our world. Thanks to them there are more role models for young women, role models for people of color, and both of those groups in space. Thanks.

Daily Creativity: Shopkins Birthday Cake

Shopkins birthday cakeDaily Creativity: Shopkins cake

Yesterday’s Daily Creativity is a cake, a Shopkins Birthday Cake. My niece’s birthday is tomorrow, but we celebrated her birthday today. I couldn’t post this yesterday, because I was up there visiting. You can expect to see today’s Daily Creativity in a forthcoming post. I’ll be drawing it once I finish writing this.

She wanted a cake of her favorite Shopkins toy. What are Shopkins?  I don’t get them at all, but it seems to be a collectable toy series with some cartoons to go with it. Everything you can think of, is a person. Some of it is really weird to me, like the poor kiwi who has had someone cut into it.  I don’t always have to understand what they are into to make them a fun cake.  BTW, she and her guests loved the cake, and the parents too.Shopkins birthday cake

I’ve been making custom cakes since high school, improving my techniques as I go along. It’s a lot of fun and pretty creative when you have to figure out how to make something out of food. I once made a Leopard I tank out of cake and cookies.  One of the things that is important to me when I make my cakes is that they are as tasty as they are pretty. I worked for a baker who had beautiful cakes, but the flavor of the most complex cakes was nothing great. Don’t get me wrong, it tasted better than a lot of other fancy cake makers, some of the really expensive wedding cakes tasted like cardboard, but they weren’t like mine. My cakes are always moist and I aim for light feeling too. His couldn’t be moist, they would have crushed under the weight and they needed to be made ahead of time. Sometimes I have failures, I made a massive TARDIS cake for Dr Who’s 50th anniversary, and it caved in. I’ve learned from that, next time I’d make the TARDIS out of rice kristpy treats and build a cake around it.

Shopkins Birthday cake inside, ombre layers gradientThis cake is a white cake with funfetti inside. I stacked it 5 layers high and made the layers gradient (or ombre) from pink to white. The frosting is mostly sugar, normally I prefer whipped cream, but not when I have to travel three hours with the cake. The fondant I made myself. I normally don’t like fondant in taste, that was until I started making my own. I make it with marshmallows and sugar, so it’s very sweet, but better than other fondant. They eyes are made from black licorice.

Daily Creativity: Pluto – Everyone’s favorite planetoid!

Daily Creativity: Pluto - Everyone's favorite planetoid!Daily Creativity: Pluto

I love Pluto, and not in a hipster “It deserves to still be a planet way.” It’s a planetoid and that’s cool. It may not be a planet but it’s still part of the family. Thanks to New Horizons we have seen some amazing images of this planetoid, including the iconic heart shape on the surface. With that in mind suddenly Pluto became much more interesting to paint. I have already painted Mars (currently on display in Tek’s office at the school), Neptune, and Jupiter, this is just one more for the solar system series. I’m working my up to Saturn, the rings make me nervous, I want to do them justice.

Daily Creativity: Orphan Black Chibis

Orphan Black Chibis - Daily CreativityI love Orphan Black, and the new season is right around the corner. In anticipation I drew the clone club as cute chibis. I know that they aren’t all the right size, for some reason the center ladies are shorter than the outside ladies, and that’s just me not planning the composition out well.

I wanted to keep this strictly black and white, which mikes things interesting considering how many of the clones wear dark colors. So I was a bit creative with lines.
