I started this sketch way back in November (at the write all night event in Nova Scotia) and FINALLY finished it this week. I decided to use colored pencils on this and I think I like how it came out. It all came out of a joke when someone (Pretty sure it was Liz) wanted a dragon for their NaNoWriMo story, I held up Rory and they said they needed an Asian Dragon, so I said Rory just needed a kimono :P
It is now the year of the dragon according to the Chinese Zodiac and that’s just fine by Rory and me, a water dragon to be more specific, and while that’s not nearly as cool as a Northern Furred Dragon, it’s pretty sweet.
I’m not very into the Zodiac, not for any other reason other than it just seems irrelevant to me. I know many people who swear by it, some who plan to have their children in certain years because of it and many other superstitions that are tied to it. I like the stories though, stories are always interesting.
I was a bit surprised there wasn’t a special Google doodle for the year of the dragon, what’s up with that Google? No love for dragons? OK I guess there was one, but I couldn’t access it because I’m in Canada? I boo that. Google doodles should not be country specific, except when it makes sense.

I’m finding I really like watercolors, yes I knew I liked them, but it’s been so long since I’ve used them. I’m having a lot of fun with this, found some of my older, better brushes too, that helps tremendously. While I think I got the right face for the Tek-Hobbes I think it’s too much Hobbes and not enough Tek. It’s hard taking a human, without any signature features other than a buzz cut and turning him into a tiger. Making the Calvin-Rory was a lot easier, the spineidies are a big Rory trait, the brown eyes and fangs and well he’s green.
I think I might use this style of painting (not the Calvin and Hobbes, but the painting style) when I illustrate the Rory goes to the Dentist book idea I’ve been thinking about.
Happy Gratefulus Day! A little watercolor rendition of Rory as Father Christmas I did on Christmas Eve, I meant to scan it in yesterday but I was a bit too busy having fun. Rory is rather proud of it.
