Daily Creativity: Love Your Body (the first)

Love Your BodyThe other day I posted a painting I did with the theme of “Love Your Body.”  What you don’t know is that isn’t the first I did of that series.  Back in July I painted this with the same theme in mind, but I never uploaded it because I was sans internet for a few weeks.

I remember not being too happy with the piece back then, but now when I look at it I’m very happy with it.  I really like what I did here.  It just goes to show that sometimes when you’re creating you need to step away from the project and get some perspective.  It works with design, writing, painting, and pretty much anything creative.

I hope to do more in this series.  It seems to have struck a cord with some people, and I think that’s a good thing.

Daily Creativity: Love Your Body

Love Your Body!Last night when I should have been sleeping, but couldn’t if my life depended on it, I made this.  I love the idea of the heart right in the middle of her body, her body was making the shape, I had to add it.  Love your body is an idea I can get behind.  We all are raised to hate our bodies, to worry over the imperfections and while trying to improve one’s self is always a nobel cause, hating your body or self is not.  You can love your body and still want to improve.  I love my big fat body and I push it to move more and push it to do things and change shape, but at the same time, loving it.  You may be fat, skinny, blemished, stretch marked, oddly proportioned (according to magazines that airbrush and photoshop everything), muscled, lacking muscle definition, pigeon chested, a crooked spine, a limp, other special needs, your body is wonderful because it’s yours and you should love it.

Daily Creativity: Wedding Dress Fashion Art

Side by side look between my wedding photo and my Fashion SketchI was browsing somewhere and came across an etsy store that does wedding dress fashion sketches and I thought “Now that’s a cool idea.”

Most women only every wear their own dress that one day.  It’s a dress often that costs a fortune (sometimes not) and a lot of time is put into thinking about and planning.  Even someone like me who doesn’t often value the girly things in life knew basically what my dress would be from a very young age.  I always knew I would be married in blue, pale blue, just like my two grandmother’s were.  Their husbands loved them to the day they died and I figured you couldn’t go wrong following something like that as a tradition.  So with all of this thought, energy, time, and money going into a dress that’s worn once, it feels like a bit of a waste.

I can’t help but want to do as Kaylee did on Firefly and keep my dress hung up in my living room so I could just sit back and admire it, but that’s not practical, is it?

Instead the idea of a fashion sketch to display in my home sounded much better.  I think I like the idea so much, that if someone wanted to hire me to do this for them, I’d be thrilled and have a lot of fun doing it :)

Now I know often fashion sketches are done on figures that are more stick like and insane proportions to accent the look of the clothes, but I don’t feel comfortable doing that for my dress.  I’m a big woman and that just feels like lying to me, I’m sure it’s fine for some other women, that they just care about the dress not so much about making the proportions accurate, I just know for me, if I am proud of my body, I don’t want to lie about it either.

It’s time for Adventure

She didn’t want to be doing this, who would?  Standing on a moving train with a ray gun pointed at a young boy’s temple, it more than looked bad.  She didn’t have a choice though, she had to get out of there alive.

Irene sold flowers outside of the great detective’s offices.  He never saw her when he passed her, never paid her any mind at all.  She was in the perfect position to be paid as a spy, and spy she did.  She reported on who entered, who exited and how often the detective left his office out of the back way.  She kept a ledger hidden under her skirts, next to where she held her purse and her dainty yet effective ray gun.  Any woman making her living on the streets needed some protection, protection and a means of income.  Selling flowers only gained her so much, but with the addition of the fee she earned for keeping a keen eye on 221-B Baker street kept her fed with a roof over her head and few coppers left over for her ray gun.

She didn’t need much more than that, so why did she get greedy when he asked her to follow him?

It all started so innocuous, her employer told her that tomorrow the detective would be leaving in disguise and meeting his companion on a train.  She needed to follow him and when they got to their final destination she was to send a telex indicating where the detective and his companion were staying.

Everything would have gone well had it been that simple.  It took two train transfers for her to continue to follow the two men, one time she was sure she was made and pretended to be selling flowers on the station platform to throw off the scent.  The great detective wasn’t the only one who was a master of disguise and the quick change.  Her overcoat was reversible and she could go from respectable traveler to low down flower girl in a moment’s notice. She kept a plethora of accessories in her handbag for just that reason.

She was sure she had done well and would follow the two men to their destination until she was confronted on the third train.  His cane creased the center of her newspaper and lowered it till he could see her face.  ”I notice everything, what on earth makes you think I wouldn’t notice you?”  Her eyes flitted up to lock eyes with him.  He looked very cross and as she knew from observing him in the past, flirting with him  wouldn’t let her escape this situation.

What choice did she have?  When the newsboy came down the isle again selling papers and candy she grabbed him and pressed her ray gun to him as fast as she could.  “Stay back, I just want out of here.”

“We’re in a moving train,”  His companion blurted out, “There isn’t exactly a side door.”

Irene wrinkled her nose.  “Isn’t there?”  She slowly backed up the isle with the kid in tow, her gaze never leaving his blue eyes.

“Who sent you?”  He asked her, following her but keeping a good ten feet away.

She giggled, “Oh you ought to know that, he is you nemesis, isn’t he?” She shoved the kid into his arms, “It’s a Pity Mr. Wayne, I was looking forward to this little holiday of ours.”  She winked and blew a kiss before ducking out the door to between the cars.

By the time he got out there she was hiding on the roof of the next car, she heard him speak to his companion.  “The desperation, she must have jumped from the train.  Dick, we can only hope she survived, as for you and I, I fear we will need to change our course once again.  We will switch trains and head to switzerland next.”

I cross a lot of fandoms on this one which is odd, since I normally don’t meddle in other people’s sandboxes.

Daily Creativity: Paintings I did over the weekend

Christiana HendricksThis weekend I did a bit more painting with the ArtRage app on my iPad.  I like it because it has layers and there issn’t any cleanup involved, also, I can paint from anywhere.  Humidity doesn’t effect my paintings and there is no drying time.  Often my oil paintings take forever to dry because I use a lot of paint and I will use linseed oil as a medium too.  I once let a painting dry for three weeks and the white was still tacky when I gave the painting to the owner.
Steampunk Rory with a mustache This first painting was done from a photo of Christina Hendricks.  I don’t think I did her justice but then again who can?  I do love how the brush stroke on her hair came out.

Next I did a painting of Rory as a Steampunked gentleman.  What more does a genteldragon need other than a top hat, a monocle, vest, cane, ray gun, and a curly mustache.

The thing that is great about doing a painting on your iPad is that if you like the basic outline, you’r not committed to just one painting or painting style.  I then took the outline and did a watercolor painting.

Rory as Doctor 11 - WatercolorThis time I painted Rory in watercolors and dressed him up as Doctor 11, Fez, Bowtie, Sonic Screwdriver and all.

I had fun with this, and liked how I could make different incarnations with the same basic outline.  I may just end up using ArtRage for the future children’s book that stars Rory.  Originally I was going to do a series of watercolors but I think I might do better with this app.  For now I’m playing an experimenting with it.  Hey you never know, if I do end up using it for the book, does that mean I can take the iPad off as a deduction from my taxes?  :)
