Nutty Bites 81: Women in Fiction – All Books are Girl Books!

Women in Fiction - Nutty BitesWomen in Fiction, the first of a few podcasts on Nutty Bites that discusses the topic of gender and fiction. In this episode Nuchtchas, Philippa “Pip” Balentine, and Melissa Bartell, discuss the concept of girl books, chick lit, and gendered fiction. They discuss how irrelevant these concepts are and how to combat the idea.

This is also the first episode created since the Nutty Bites Patreon campaign has been launched. Listen till the end to learn more about the campaign, the goals, and reward levels, including a limited time/quantity reward level!  Also this is the first time I read the names of the patrons on the podcast to thank them. This time it was in order of pledge.

Daily Creativity: Pluto – Everyone’s favorite planetoid!

Daily Creativity: Pluto - Everyone's favorite planetoid!Daily Creativity: Pluto

I love Pluto, and not in a hipster “It deserves to still be a planet way.” It’s a planetoid and that’s cool. It may not be a planet but it’s still part of the family. Thanks to New Horizons we have seen some amazing images of this planetoid, including the iconic heart shape on the surface. With that in mind suddenly Pluto became much more interesting to paint. I have already painted Mars (currently on display in Tek’s office at the school), Neptune, and Jupiter, this is just one more for the solar system series. I’m working my up to Saturn, the rings make me nervous, I want to do them justice.

Daily Creativity: Orphan Black Chibis

Orphan Black Chibis - Daily CreativityI love Orphan Black, and the new season is right around the corner. In anticipation I drew the clone club as cute chibis. I know that they aren’t all the right size, for some reason the center ladies are shorter than the outside ladies, and that’s just me not planning the composition out well.

I wanted to keep this strictly black and white, which mikes things interesting considering how many of the clones wear dark colors. So I was a bit creative with lines.

Daily Creativity: Embarking on Self Love! Love Your Body

Embarking on Self Love - Love Your Body - Daily CreativityEmbarking on Self Love, another piece in the Love Your Body series. This was inspired by a conversation about some fat shaming art and I wanted to turn the title of that art into something positive and uplifting. I painted my figure in yellows and oranges because I wanted her to seem like she was glowing, glowing with love. I then used a heart to be perhaps a little too literal about the concept, but it also marches some oil paintings I’ve done for a show, but not shared online, yet. Looking in a mirror is one of the most evocative images I can think of when it comes to self image, so I think that fits too.  I painted this in watercolors much like many of my other recent paintings. I really like the control and color that I get from watercolor. Plus it lets me paint without spending multiple days on a project and having to wait over a week for it to dry.

Daily Creativity: Steampunk Dragon Rory

Steampunk Dragon Rory - Daily CreativityDaily Creativity: Steampunk Dragon Rory

A Steampunk Dragon you ask? I wanted to use my brown micron markers tonight, so I decided to draw something Steampunk. Rory is always a good subject so I thought, if Rory could build himself one thing in the steampunk world, what would it be? Steam wings of course. Originally I was going to only use ink, but when I finished outlining I wanted to paint it, but the paper I choose isn’t good for watercolors. So instead I used the right end of my colored pencils spectrum.
