Nutty Bites 127: Code Switching with Jason Banks, Jen, and Tek!

Nutty Bites 127: Code SwitchingNutty Bites 127: Code Switching

code-switch·ing
noun

LINGUISTICS
  1. the practice of alternating between two or more languages or varieties of language in conversation.
“the conversational code-switching of the German-American bilingual community”

Code Switching is a term we learned recently from MTV’s Decoded web series. This is a phenomenon (doo-doo-dee-do-do) that is often expressed by Jason or Tek. Where they float between languages and dialects with different people and situations. We also get down to my ribbing of Jason on some of his pronunciations, in which, I am wrong and he is right. When we learn about something, we want to share it with all of you.

Nutty Bites 126: They Stole My Idea!

Nutty Bites 126: They Stole My Idea!

Nutty Bites 126: They Stole My Idea! They Stole My Idea! It’s a feeling many geeks have had when they had created a narrative only to see the same store show up in media. Whether by Multiple Discovery or from a direct influence, we see stories show up over and over again. Sometimes it is great, it’s like someone made something just for you, and other times it is frustrating because it is a disservice to your idea.

Nutty Bites 123: Intro to Ghibli – Ponyo

Nutty Bites 123: Intro to Ghibli – Ponyo

Nutty Bites 123: Intro to Ghibli - PonyoPonyo is a bit out of the viewing order for us because it happened to be playing in theatres. If a film is in theatres and we can see it we will always jump the que. Better yet, this tim Tek and I were in VA visiting Jen and Jason, so we all got to go to the threatre together. This is the first time we had that chance. We have watched Princess Mononoke together, but that was in a hotel while Tek and I felt their eyes on us watching our reactions. A theatre is much better.

This also happens to be the 10th anniversary for Ponyo’s release. So that is extra special. Spoiler for the podcast, we loved this movie. It was pure joy. If you haven’t seen it, see it. It is worth the watch, You can watch it with anyone in your life, no matter the age.

Nutty Bites 121: Book or Movie?

Nutty Bites: Book or Movie?

Nutty Bites: Book or Movie?

Book or Movie? It’s often said that the movie is never as good as the book, but sometimes that isn’t the case. Sometimes the book is better, and sometimes the movie is better. And sometimes the book and movie aren’t even the same story so why bother calling it the same? Why not just file the serial numbers off and make a new thing? Hugh, Jason, Jen, and Jay, join Nuchtchas and Tek to discuss both books and movies.

Nutty Bites 111: Intro to Ghibli – Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind

Nutty Bites 111: Intro to Ghibli – Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind

Nutty Bites 111: Intro to Ghibli – Nausicaä of the Valley of the WindNausicaä of the Valley of the Wind is coming a bit out of order thanks to it being shown locally at the theatre. We couldn’t pass up the chance to see it on the big screen with an audience. Originally we had planned to watch all of the Miyazaki Ghibli movies first, move on to Takahata, then watch non Takahata/Miyazaki Ghibli movies, and then go back to Miyazaki’s non Ghibli movies. The chance to see the movies in theatre made us rework the viewing order. We also realized that we didn’t want to have a bunch of sad movies together, so we reworked the order. Mostly in release order, except when we needed to put an uplifting film between two sad ones. There is a link below.

Ghibli Cast Rating SystemWe also clarified our rating system since some listeners were confused by our ratings. This should make our ratings a bit more clear and less insulting to some. (Though I am still insulted at Jason’s Whisper of the Heart rating).
