Daily Creativity: Ursula

Ursula watercolor paintingI don’t normally do straight paintings of established characters like this.  Just painting someone else’s art makes me feel like I’m copying, but this time I wanted to do a painting of Ursula the Sea Witch because she is just plain awesome.  Not only is she a great villain but she’s a woman in power and control of her life and her body.  Sure she is is evil, but she still has everything else going for her, and she makes a really good role model.  I always liked her songs and liked her attitude.

“Never under estimate the power of BODY LANGUAGE! Ha!”

I hope to one day get a cool Ursula costume going for myself, I just want to make sure that when I do, her tentacles look awesome, not cheap, that’s the big thing holding me back right now.

Ursula doesn’t apologize for anything, she takes up space and fills a room, and if she’s really mad, she just gets bigger.  She’s plain awesome.

Daily Creativity: Love Your Body (the first)

Love Your BodyThe other day I posted a painting I did with the theme of “Love Your Body.”  What you don’t know is that isn’t the first I did of that series.  Back in July I painted this with the same theme in mind, but I never uploaded it because I was sans internet for a few weeks.

I remember not being too happy with the piece back then, but now when I look at it I’m very happy with it.  I really like what I did here.  It just goes to show that sometimes when you’re creating you need to step away from the project and get some perspective.  It works with design, writing, painting, and pretty much anything creative.

I hope to do more in this series.  It seems to have struck a cord with some people, and I think that’s a good thing.

Daily Creativity: Love Your Body

Love Your Body!Last night when I should have been sleeping, but couldn’t if my life depended on it, I made this.  I love the idea of the heart right in the middle of her body, her body was making the shape, I had to add it.  Love your body is an idea I can get behind.  We all are raised to hate our bodies, to worry over the imperfections and while trying to improve one’s self is always a nobel cause, hating your body or self is not.  You can love your body and still want to improve.  I love my big fat body and I push it to move more and push it to do things and change shape, but at the same time, loving it.  You may be fat, skinny, blemished, stretch marked, oddly proportioned (according to magazines that airbrush and photoshop everything), muscled, lacking muscle definition, pigeon chested, a crooked spine, a limp, other special needs, your body is wonderful because it’s yours and you should love it.

Daily Creativity: Happy Nude (NWS)

I painted this painting last night, based on an image I found on tumblr.  Yet now when it comes time to post online I find myself hesitating.  Not because I would classify the painting as R or even PG-13, but because other people might.  The internet can be touchy and since I have tried to keep my presence at a PG rating I wonder.  So if you’d like to see the full panting, either click the thumbnail, or look below the cut.

I like to paint my figures with non representational colors, it lets me accentuate curves, shadow and highlight better.  I chose this figure because of the smile mostly, which is interesting because painting an open mouth often looks odd to me.  The original figure is dressed (and wow does she every look awesome/hot/amazing/sexy/happy/wonderful/beautiful/lively/heathy/fantastic) but I just loved her form and as I painted her I didn’t paint clothes.  I miss painting from a live model, but thankfully the internet gives me many photo models.
