Daily Creativity: ClipArt

Mr Blue as Clip Art
I’ve been working on a poster for one of my clients and I wasn’t happy with the clip art I was using.  Sure the clipart al looked good but it didn’t match, it wasn’t cohesive for one poster.

So I took out my sketchbook and pencils and came up with this little guy.  I don’t have a name for him but I figured he was generic enough and cute enough to work.  I then scanned it and made vector art out of them.  There are more, but I thought I would share five of them as my Daily Creativity for today.

Daily Creativity: Yark, Yark! A Kobold!

Kobold still hate you
I love D&D, I also play a game DDO (Dungeons and Dragons Online) and for the past ten days I have been not killing Kobolds but helping them mine crystals.  So, in honor of that I drew a little Kobold pretesting as part of the “Ethical Treatment of Kobolds” movement :)

Some of my favorite lines from the event/kobolds were
“Yark, Yark” (of course)
“Kobold still hate you”
“kobold family eat fresh rat tonight”
“we never forget waterworks!”
“not in the face, not in the face”
Yeah, I guess you had to be there.

Daily Creativity: Crane, Wishing for recovery in Japan

Japan Crane

You’ve heard the Japanese folktale that if you fold 1000 origami cranes you will be granted a wish, right?

I have been thinking of Japan since the earthquake, I wanted to draw something for Japan, but didn’t know what. Last night as I lay awake in bed, being kept awake with a flurry of ideas, I thought about the cranes. I could have folded one, but for me drawing it means more. It means more because of the process I go through when I draw. I get into it, my thoughts go into the drawing, the moment in time is mine.

As the viewer, a drawn crane or a folded crane has the same meaning to you. You don’t experience the process, you don’t experience my thought process or emotions, you just experience what you are seeing. So I hope this works for you too.

If you have a moment, and if you have the funds, please, give a few bucks to the red cross, for this tragedy and for the next one.

Daily Creativity: Nobilis as Pop Art

Nobilis Reed as Pop Art
I started something when I did my Pop Art for other people.  First I did Robin, then Viv asked for me to do her, then the requests rolled in.  I’m spacing them out, but you can expect to see more of this :)

I really do love doing this, it’s weird to explain why, I’m not even sure I can say why.

First I draw the subject in flat color, then I add details, put some nifty graphic background, then I make the original image all newsprinty, and overlay it.

Today’s subject is Nobilis Reed, author, podcaster and all around good guy.  I can’t wait for my yearly meet up with Mr. Reed at Balticon, and hopefully some book tour stops for our author friends.
