Nutty Bites 135: Tropes!

Nutty Bites 135: Tropes!

Nutty Bites 135: Tropes!Tropes can be helpful or hurtful. Nutty, Tek, Encaf1, Jason, Jen, and Melissa discuss when to stick by the tropes and when to abandon them and start new. There is a knee jerk desire to say always start with something new, but sometimes you need to respect your fans. We get off topic more than once, and this is a crossover episode with Talk Nerdy 2 Me, so things get fun. I ended up cutting a lot out of this episode and if people want the bloopers maybe I can release them but you have to ask for it.

Nutty Bites 134: Intimate Friendships

Nutty Bites 134: Intimate Friendships

Nutty Bites 134: Intimate FriendshipsIntimate Friendships are often overlooked in both society and fiction. Nutty, Tek, Jason, and Melissa got together to discuss some of their favorite examples.

These friendships are essential and necessary and can sometimes be more important than romantic pairings. Close friendships of this level can be the cure for loneliness. I remember a speech given by Mister Rogers about how intimacy and learning to express one’s feelings, to feel your feelings, is important for all of our mental health. Too many good fiction can be ruined by skipping intimacy and diving straight into romance or sex.

A few disclaimers, the day after we recorded this, one of the writers behind Bert and Ernie came out as saying that he modeled their friendship off of his with his husband. A few days after that Sesame Street again made a statement saying the characters aren’t a couple but just kids and best friends. I don’t think that this statement derails from our discussion in this episode, more proves the intimacy between the two characters.

Disclaimer two, we recorded this two weeks ago but life has been so crazy I just couldn’t do the simplest editing a processing to get it posted. I’m sorry, but this still counts as a September episode and there will still be two episodes for October. It is sad it took me so long to get to it because it needed almost no editing, just needed the bumpers and promos added.

Nutty Bites 133: Cartoons Then vs Now

Nutty Bites 133: Cartoons Then vs Now

Nutty Bites 133: Cartoons Then vs NowCartoons then vs Now is when Nutty, Tek, Jen, Jason, & brand new podcaster Cee Jaye get into the nitty gritty of cartoons. We talked about older cartoons, 80/90s cartoons, and what we can watch today. What worked, what didn’t work, and what we’d like to see more of. Also, we delved into the remake of older cartoons and where they succeeded, shows such as MLP & Voltron.

Nutty Bites: To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before – Dinner and a Movie – Dog Days of Podcasting 2018

Nutty Bites: To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before – Dinner and a Movie – Dog Days of Podcasting 2018

Nutty Bites: To All the Boys I've Loved - Dinner and a Movie - Dog Days of Podcasting 2018To All the Boys I’ve Loved is a Netflix teen movie that I really enjoyed. It’s fluff but I like fluff. Sometimes you just need a teen movie to kick back and veg to. I thought from the trailer the main character was adopted. That’s what got me watching only to find it was a mixed race family, also cool. I get excited by adopted families on TV because I have two adopted brothers. It’s something that seems pretty rare on TV, and when it is done, it is often bad.

Update! Wait a second, THIS is the movie I heard about where the author refused to sign off on any adaptation where the main character was played by a non asian! This was huge! I’m so happy that the movie I had read about was good! Many execs said that the race shouldn’t matter when casting and the author said if that is the case then cast an asian. The character is Korean-American, and while it is not the main topic of the movie, it is essential to the character. Wow! I’m so excited now. You can read more by an avid fan of the book.

I’m going to miss Dog Days of Podcasting. I love having all of these familiar voices in my ears. I count all of these podcasters as my friends and many of them go silent over the rest of the year. Till next August I suppose.

I’ve been thinking and praying a lot about my friend Scott Pond lately and especially today. You can find out more about his struggle here. #PondyStrong #TeamPondy

Nutty Bites: Turn & The Crown – Dinner and a Movie – Dog Days of Podcasting 2018

Nutty Bites: Turn & The Crown – Dinner and a Movie – Dog Days of Podcasting 2018

Nutty Bites: Turn & The Crown - Dinner and a Movie - Dog Days of Podcasting 2018Tonight’s episode is a 2 for 1 bonus! Turn: Washington’s Spies and The Crown are two historical dramas that I have been watching. Turn is a full and complete series and The Crown is two seasons in. Both have great acting and actors that you may know from other series that you already love. Much like I have explained before, I love a good historical drama. It lets me research and see what they got right and what they changed for dramatic effect, or for other reasons. Sorry Betsy, far too little of Hercules Mulligan in Turn, but it’s still worth the watch.
